1. Placement of Scratching Posts

  • Observe Your Cat's Behavior: Before deciding where to place the scratching post, watch your cat for a few days. Notice where they tend to scratch the most, whether it's near a window, their favorite napping spot, or in a corner of the room. Placing the scratching post in an area they already associate with scratching will increase the likelihood of them using it.
  • Strategic Location: Place vertical scratching posts near furniture that your cat might otherwise target, like sofas or curtains. For horizontal scratching pads, put them in areas where your cat likes to lounge, such as in front of a sunny window or beside their bed. Multi - level scratching trees can be positioned in the middle of a room where your cat has plenty of space to move around and explore.

2. Maintenance and Care

  • Sisal - covered Posts: Regularly inspect the sisal on vertical scratching posts. Over time, it may become frayed or worn. If you notice significant damage, you can re - wrap the post with new sisal rope. This not only gives your cat a fresh surface to scratch but also extends the life of the post.
  • Cardboard Pads: Cardboard scratching pads will need to be replaced more frequently as they wear down. Some cats may also like to chew on the cardboard, so check for any small pieces that could be a choking hazard. You can also sprinkle a little catnip on the cardboard to make it more appealing.
  • Multi - level Trees: Check the stability of multi - level scratching trees regularly. Ensure that all the platforms are securely attached, and the structure is not wobbling. Clean any fur or debris from the platforms and scratching surfaces to keep the tree clean and inviting for your cat.

3. Encouraging Use

  • Introduce with Catnip: When you first bring home a new scratching post, rub some catnip on it. The enticing scent of catnip will attract your cat and encourage them to investigate and start scratching. You can also sprinkle a small amount of catnip on the post periodically to keep their interest.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Whenever you see your cat using the scratching post, praise them immediately. You can also give them a small treat as a reward. This positive association will make your cat more likely to use the scratching post in the future.

4. Combining with Other Cat Accessories

  • Toys: Attach some cat toys to the scratching post, such as a small bell - adorned ball or a feather wand. This will make the scratching post more engaging and fun for your cat, increasing the time they spend interacting with it.
  • Beds: Place a cat bed near the scratching post. This creates a cozy little corner for your cat, where they can scratch to their heart's content and then take a nap right after.
